In 1988, the company maintained a workforce of 1,330 employees with a gross sales amounting to $4.7 million also for the same year. The company is part of the NASDAQ and classified as an Electronic Computer Manufacturing entity.

The three IT industry luminaries joined forces to raise close to $50 million for the funding of the startup capital of Encore. The three founders had the intention of developing and marketing a wide range of products that included desktop and mainframe computer systems.

With the computer market having a net worth of $31 billion during that time, the founders were confident that Encore can get a huge chunk of this industry.

The company immediately went after Hydra Computer Systems, Inc. for the development of its processors. It turned to Foundation Computer Systems, Inc. to develop its required software, and established business arrangements with Resolution Systems, Inc. for the production of the computer terminals.

During the periods of 1984 to 1985 the company focused majority of its resources in the design and distribution of UNIX based computer systems and terminal servers.

In this same period, Encore established its reputation as a leader in the early symmetric and parallel multiprocessing development of computer systems. In 1988 the company built and deployed its own innovative 32-way design for the UNIX symmetrical multiprocessor equipped with a unique computational ability.

The company skillfully combined high technology symmetrical multiprocessing development (including advances in design) with microprocessor based systems that have high speed reflective memory systems. This technological combination provided the foundation for the development and eventual distribution of Encore’s Infinity 90 Series.

This system was considered as an open systems mainframe with an I/O bandwidth and huge storage capability. Its topology was intended to solve single failure in any network without significantly affecting the whole system.

In July 1997 the storage products business of Encore was purchased by Sun Microsystems, Inc. for $185 million. The purchase was made by Sun in the hopes that Encore’s software would lead to the development of high-end intelligent storage solutions. In 1998 Encore proceeded with the acquisition of SEL (Systems Engineering Laboratories) which at the time was owned by Nippon Mining.

The initial design produced by Encore was the Multimax which was an industrial creation that relied on bus checking to allow multiple processors to allocate memory. The uniqueness of this design lies in its ability to handle numerous processors simultaneously.

This technology is similar to the dual core and quad core processors developed by major manufacturers in the computer market. Subsequently, the focus of development of the company centered on the Personal Computer systems based on the RISC processors.

The principal market competitors of the company are Hitachi Data Systems Corporation, Dell Inc., EMC Corporation, and International Business Machines Corporation.
