Company Name: Encad
Description: Founders Richard Murray and David Purcell established Encad in 1981. The company was based in California using the Purcell household for its operation base. From this startup operation, the company has grown to such proportions that it has over 67 distributors across the globe.
The company also maintains production agreements with major corporations like Eastman Kodak. Its successful business operation also allowed it to gain substantial share of the consumer market.
The company maintains a labor force of 300 employees and has an annual revenue of $32.4 million. Richard Murray brings a wealth of technical expertise to the company having worked for numerous years for Hewlett-Packard before assuming the position of Chief Technical Officer for Encad.
Murray is responsible for the development of new products for the company. These product innovations allows the company to protect itself against aggressive market strategies by Hewlett-Packard which was the most dominant enterprise in the printer market at the time with 75% share.
Encad has lucratively become one of the market leaders in the area of designing, developing, and manufacturing of inkjet computer printers. These printers were intended to deliver high quality colored images regardless of the print media. These devices also supported the fashion, computer aided blueprints, graphic arts, and sign making industries.
The company also earned a reputation as a creative market leader in the field of digital imaging solutions. It was responsible for delivering various wide format printers, scientifically matched inks and media, and proprietary applications to the market.
By 1982 the company introduced to the market its pen-plotter printer line and in 1995 it produced a business arrangement with one of the leading digital imaging companies in the industry, Xerox Corporation. This agreement raised the company’s annual sales to $65.5 million that year and to $107.4 million the year after that.
On February 4, 2002 the company was absorbed by Kodak Corporation and became the company’s main subsidiary to the customized imaging market. Majority of Encad’s printer devices started to hit the market under the Kodak brand name.
In terms of transition, there was very little trouble encountered since Kodak previously was a customer of Encad. Part of the deal specified that Regina Pizzoli (Kodak’s General Manager for the US and Canadian Markets) assume the position of Chief Executive Officer of Encad. This position is held by Terry Vandewarker who retains the position of Company President. In November 2003 the company announced that Barry R. Lathan has been appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer.
Brad Kutchen moves over to the corporate management team of its parent company Eastman Kodak. He will be directly responsible for the Wholesale and Online Services of the company.
The company introduced to the market an inkjet printer that is capable of directly printing on specially coated fabrics while maintaining high resolution images. The market release of this product made a significant impact on the fashion industry. This product release is part of the company’s response to the continue market competition from Hewlett-Packard.
Encad also consistently fends off market competition from QMS, Inc., Xerox Corporation, and Lexmark.
