Company Name: ELO
Description: Initially founded under the corporate name Graphical Data Digitizers, ELO began in the industry in March 1971. The company was headed by Dr. Samuel C. Hurst for two years and was responsible for the development of the electronic graphics (elograph) coordinate measuring system. Supposedly this served as the basis for the company’s adoption of the name ELO to reference its newly developed system.
This invention provided the industry with a faster way of reading charts. Eventually the company attained the status of a global leader in the touch technology market. It became known for the development, manufacturing, distribution, and marketing of a comprehensive touch screen and display monitor line which included both LCD and CRT touch monitor variants.
The company maintains a workforce of approximately 500 employees across the globe. The company has corporate presence in Miami, Argentina, and Brazil in order to look after the requisites of its customer base in Latin America, Central America, and the Caribbean markets.
ELO has kept its headquarters in Menlo Par in California. Manufacturing sites are situated in Asia, Europe, and the continental United States. Regional offices can be seen in Belgium and Japan which efficiently responds to the needs of both the European and Asian markets.
Part of the company’s success is attributed to its various management luminaries. The executive leadership of ELO is composed of Mark Menderhall (President), Luc Mergray (Vice President), Dennis Gilroy (Chief Financial Officer), Steven Abramovich (Vice President for Sales and Global Marketing), Hide Yamajo (Managing Director for Touch Panels Systems in Japan), and Ken North (Director of Engineering and Technology).
Likewise included in the list of the company’s top officers are Marianne Baker (Director of Human Resource), Robert A. De Renzi (Global Director of Quality), Greg Swistak (Director of Custom Solutions), Geoff Walker (Director of Product Management), Ravi Narayan (Senior Globe Director for Operations), and Keith Pradhan (Director of Business Development).
Credited with the pioneering of the touch screen technology in 1971 via the invention of Dr. Hurst, the company was the first to produce the electronic touch interface. By 1974 the ELO had successfully improved the product to implement a transparent surface. In the same year the company patented the five-wire touch screen technology which is widely adapted in various industries to this date.
The relative success of ELO in the market made it a lucrative prospect for Raychem Corporation which acquired the company in 1986. ELO continued with its product research and development including the marketing of its products and services under its own brand. Three years after being taken over by Raychem, ELO introduced to the computer market the first mouse emulation driver via the Monitor Mouse for the Microsoft Windows 2.0 and the DOS Operating System platforms.
IntelliTouch became one of the most popular contributions of ELO by releasing this breakthrough technology in 1991. This touch feature was intentionally designed with enhanced sensitive and doubled speed. The development of this technology resulted to the subsequent release of the IntelliTouch Ultra which featured a higher resolution. It then proceeded to introduce the AccuTouch HL which came with an increased light transmission.
The Monitor Mice driver application was released in 1995 and allowed the running of multiple monitors on a single computer running on the Microsoft Windows Operating System environment. By 1999 the company came up with another technological breakthrough via the iTouch technology. The company successfully took control of Carroll Touch Systems, Touch Panel Systems, and National Integration Services, Inc. The Entuitive touch monitor product line made its debut in the computer market in 2000.
