It was founded as Electronics Corporation of Israel in 1961 and was then renamed to ECI Telecom in 1984. It initially manufactured products for the military sector in 1970. It subsequently entered the civilian market in 1977. Since then, ECI has grown from a small high-tech company into a respected global supplier of networking solutions.
In 1993, ECI merged with Telematics International Inc. and acquired Telematics in 1994. After this, the company went into a series of mergers and acquisition activities. These included a joint venture with China-based Hangzhou Communications Equipment Factory in 1996 and the purchase of Tadiran Telecommunications in 1999.
ECI was separated into several companies in 2000. There were five groups formed. First is the Transport Bandwidth Management Solutions. Second is the Access Solutions, followed by Optical Networking Solutions, then InnoWave Fixed Wireless Access Solutions, and finally the NGTS IP Solutions.
After the split, it acquired Wavepacer. It then merged its NGTS and NexVerse Networks business to create Veraz Networks in 2003. It further purchased Laurel Networks and Eastern Communication Inc. in 2005.
ECI was very successful with a DCME product line in 1990s. It, however, faltered as a result of the bursting of the technology industry bubble in the 2000’s. The company suffered difficulties since then. It was only after Swarth’s Group’s acquisition of ECI in 2007 that it was able to successfully recover. In 2007, ECI was bought for $1.2 billion.
The company offers a wide range of solutions to converge telecommunication networks. These include its award-winning Service Edge Routers, optical transport, broadband multi-service access gateways, and NGN Voice over Internet Protocol (IP) and Core/MPLS Routers.
Some of the products launched by the company in 2008 were utilized for migrating to the next generation telecommunications infrastructures such as the 9000 Family, the XDM Series, the BG Series and ST Series.
ECI was selected by the Beijing Power and Beijing Subway in China to upgrade their communication networks for the 2008 Olympics. The company was also ranked as the number one equipment supplier in India in 2007 for the second consecutive time.
