Company Name: Echelon
Description: In 1990 LonWorks was released to the market for the purpose of deployment to building, home automation, transportation, and industrial markets. LonWorks is responsible for providing the foundation used for the development and creation of Control Networks.
This technology is the specific area of expertise of Echelon Corporation which has made a name for itself in the area of development and implementation of this technology used for connecting networked machines including other types of electronic equipments. The connection process serves the purpose of controlling, sensing, and monitoring of various environments.
Kenneth Oshman founded the ROLM Corporation in 1969 and served in the capacity of its President, Director, and Chief Executive Officer until it was eventually purchased in 1984 by IBM Corporation. During the take over, Oshman assumed the role of Vice President for IBM. In 1988 Oshman eventually moved to Echelon Corporation where he was appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer and Chairman.
With Oshman at the helm, the company depended on the able support of other management luminaries that made up the executive team. These personalities included Oliver "Chris" Stanfield (Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President), Anders Axelsson (Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing), and Kathleen Bloch (General Counsel and Senior Vice President).
Other top executives include Frederik "Frits" Bruggink (General Manager and Senior Vice President for Service Provider Group), Robert Dolin (Chief Technology Officer and Vice President), Russell Harris (Senior Vice President for Operations), and Robert Machlin (Senior Vice President for Company Products).
The Networked Energy Services (NES) developed by Echelon was launched into the IT market in 2003. This product was developed to support open metering infrastructures. The system delivers network technology to the biggest advanced meter management in the entire world which is situated in Italy.
This facility covers more than 27 million linked electricity meters. Echelon Corporation was awarded the contract to provide the NES meter solution to literally hundreds of thousands of utility customers in Sweden and the Netherlands.
The modern control networks deployed by the company are considered as smart devices with the capability of monitoring, controlling, and sensing network variations. Companies that implement this product include Tokyo’s Ropponghi Hills (the largest mixed use facility in the Asian region), Goddard Space Flight Center’s shuttle building, Ariston Digital washing machines, Seoul’s World Cup football stadium, New York City subway system, and the Louvre.
With its success in the industrial market, Echelon Corporation began its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 1998. The company’s flagship application LonMaker for Windows became the de facto standard for network tools deployed in the industry. By 2001 as part of the company’s expansion efforts, it purchased the ARIGO GmbH. During the next two years it successfully took over the control of BeAtHome and the Metering Technology Corporation.
The company expects to install by 2008 its 100th million intelligent device based on the LonWorks technology. The lighting system for the Olympic Village in the 2008 Beijing Olympics was monitored and controlled by the company’s metering technology.
