Company Name: DSP GroupDescription: Co-founded by Shabtai Adlesbergin 1987, the DSP Group Inc was originally headquartered in Israel and eventually made its way to other countries in the American, Asian, and European regions. On February 11, 1994 the company made its Initial Public Offering (IPO) and went public. The company’s initial operation was in the field of digital technology.
It 1999 the company acquired from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) a 900-MHz Radio Frequency (RF) group. AMD is known in the computer industry as a semiconductor company involved in the development of computer processors and similar technologies catering to the commercial computer market.
On March 28, 2000 DSP also successfully acquired 71% of the controlling shares for the software distributor company VoicePump. This company earned the reputation of supplying the market with embedded DSP applications catering to the high density Voice over DSL (VoDSL) and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) markets. The following year the DSP Group purchased the remaining stocks of VoicePump and transformed the company into a wholly owned subsidiary.
By October of the same year the DSP Group went into a strategic merger with the Parthus Technologies to establish the ParthusCeva Inc. This also resulted in the spinning off of the DSP Cores licensing operation which was merged with the Parthus Ventures. The DSP Group proceeded to purchase the resources of Teleman Multimedia Inc on May 19, 2003.
At the time of the acquisition Teleman was known in the IT industry as a developer of silicon platform implemented in the area of video compression and decompression. Its product was designed to provide interface with panel displays and image sensors. This particular acquisition covered all the intellectual property, patents, and even the researches and development processes of Teleman.
Bermail Inc was the next target of acquisition by the DSP Group. In October 2004 it successfully acquired the software developer which catered to the requisites of the wireless communications market. This acquisition was a key component of the company’s intentions to diversify its operation to cover the emerging technologies for Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) products for the home consumer.
On September 4, 2007 the company purchased from NXP B.V. its CIPT Business which centered on the VoIP and cordless terminals market. This take over was meant to provide the DSP Group with access to the European DECT.
On the whole, the company concentrates majority of its resources on the development and marketing of system chip solutions mainly applicable to portable multimedia devices, VoIP applications, and short range communication equipments. These product solutions also provide support for the cordless and corded telephones, answering machines, and voice recorders.
Some of DSP Group’s direct competitors are Texas Instruments, Oki Semiconductor, and Infineon Technologies. The company was ranked 165th in the San Francisco Top 200 and 114th in the Silicon Valley Top 150 as of April 18, 2007. DSP Group remains a major player in the manufacturing of Integrated Digital Baseband processors.
