Company Name: DirectX

Description: Microsoft Corporation introduced into the computer industry the DirectX technology which is explicitly utilized and incorporated into the different platforms of the Microsoft Windows Operating System environments.

The DirectX technology was developed by Eric Engstrom, Craig Eisler, and Alex St. John in order to attract majority of software developers to use the Microsoft Windows environment for their programming. This technology provides the developers with direct access to the functionality of various computer hardware components like keyboards, video and audio cards, and other similar peripherals interfaced into the computer system.

DirectX is composed of various Application Programming Interfaces (API) which includes functions, classes, procedures, and methods which support tasks that are undertaken by different computer programs. This technology has exceptional feature sets that allow for the execution of different multimedia tasks that are associated to computer gaming and video files.

Prior to the introduction of the Microsoft Windows 95 Operating System into the IT market, developers of computer games relied on the proficiencies of the MS-DOS platforms for the creation of video games. APIs initially were addressed based on the functionality that they provided to the computer system like in the case of Direct3D, DirectSound, DirectMusic, DirectPlay, and DirectDraw among others.

With the introduction of the DirectX technology, everything was represented under a comprehensive product suite. The X represents the general coverage that the application provides for all APIs used by the computer system.

The first version of the technology was released on September 30, 1995 and incorporated into the later version of the Microsoft Windows 95 Operating System platform. Come early 1996 the second version of the technology which is an upgrade was released. During the same year, Microsoft released three versions of DirectX (2.0a, 3.0, and 3.0a) to users of Windows based systems. The releases were made from June to December of that year.

The fourth version was not publicly released by Microsoft with version 5.0 representing the next released version and was distributed as a beta version specifically for the Microsoft Windows NT Operating System platform. The July 16, 1997 release of this beta version was followed by the 5.2 version which came out on May 5, 1998.

Microsoft Corporation released another version of the DirectX 5.2 on June 25 of the same year. This latest version was exclusive for use of systems running under the Microsoft Windows 98 Operating System environment.

The sixth and the 6.1 versions of the technology were released on August 7, 1998 and February 3, 1999 respectively and were designed purposely for deployment to devices running on the Microsoft Windows CE platform. This system is usually found in embedded and minimalist systems. The DirectX 6.1a introduced on May 5, 1999 was an upgrade for the version installed together with the Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition Operating Systems.

On September 22, 1999 and on February 17, 2000 Microsoft released two separate instances of the DirectX 7.0 and were both intended for the Windows 2000 platform. The 7.1 version was explicit for the Windows Millennium Edition platform. The DirectX 8.0a released to the market on February 5, 2001 was the last to be released by Microsoft that supported the Microsoft Windows 95 environment.

Similar with the version 7 of the technology, Microsoft again released two separate versions of the DirectX 10 on November 30, 2006 and the other on February 4, 2008. Both of these were meant for the newest operating system of Microsoft to date, the Windows Vista.

DirectX technology was recognized with an Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering for its breakthrough technology in providing developers with real-time access to programmable shading using modern graphics processors.
