Company Name: Digital Equipment Corporation DECDescription: The Digital Equipment Corporation was founded in 1957 by two individuals from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Harland Anderson and Ken Olsen were able to successfully put up Digital Equipment by securing the $70,000 capital from General George Doriot of the American Research and Development Corporation. The company made Maynard, Massachusetts as its business base.
Ken Olsen served as the first Chief Executive Officer of the company until Robert Palmer assumed the position in June 1992. The company was one of the pioneers in the American computer market that focused on the design and development of small digital modules like transformer drives, flip-flops, and gates that are used in various engineering experiments.
With Palmer at the helm, the company experienced various losses that eventually led to the disposing of majority of its assets. The continued decline of the company’s financial resources opened it up to the subsequent take over by Compaq in January 1998.
Compaq later on was involved in a merger with Hewlett-Packard and the two companies introduced to the IT market the DEC StorageWorks disk storage solution line. The companies decided to retain the DEC brand and capitalize on the reputation it has built in the industry.
At the peak of its operation the company focused on the supply and design of various devices that catered to the requisites of different computer network systems. The company was known for delivering services and software solutions to a diverse range of clienteles. DEC products also found wide deployments in areas such as engineering, graphic arts, word processing, and scientific analysis.
One of the most popular products to be released by DEC to the market is the PDP-8 which is its first minicomputer offering to the industry. This device features a small but powerful packaging which was made available for usage of non-specialists. This product was eventually picked up by OEM companies for incorporation into their production processes.
The introduction of the VAX (Virtual Address eXtension) minicomputer was also credited to the company. This computer system utilized PDP’s memory and paging protection functionalities. This device literally dominated the minicomputer market during the later part of the 1970s.
During the early part of the 1980s the DEC released ten new versions of the VAX minicomputers. These computer systems had the inherent ability of sharing data not only among similar systems but also with those created by other manufacturers.
By May 1982 DEC made its entry into the Personal Computer market which was a thriving industry at the time. The company was responsible for introducing the Rainbow 100, the Professional 350, and the DECmate II to the IT industry.
These systems stood out from the rest of the products at that time due to its lack of support for the CP/M and the 8080 based microcomputers which dominated the market. The company’s PC systems also did not have any compatibility with the MS-DOS Operating System platform.
Due to these shortcomings, DEC failed to actively compete with the PC systems released by the Taiwan based Wang Laboratories to the market. These competing machines also had customized built-in applications which made a big difference for consumers. DEC was one of the very first corporations to gain access to the Internet by registering its dot com domain in 1985.
On October 1, 1993 Digital Equipment Corporation became the first computer system seller to have a functional public access website. The company is also responsible for creating one of the more popular and dynamic search engines on the Internet using the AltaVista name.
