Company: 2wire
Description: The manufacturer of computer peripherals 2Wire was established in 1998 in California by Pasquale Romano, Brian Hinman, and Brad Kayton. The company management was composed of Romano (President and CEO), George Laplante (CFO), Jeff Bernstein (Director of Research and Development), and Dale Bastian (VP for Marketing).
The company is mainly involved in the process of designing and manufacturing telecommunication devices like telephones, adapters, modems, and similar devices that are intended to support the implementation of broadband connectivity along with media to media conversion technology.
The CMS was introduced sometime in 2002 by the company as a representation for the backend remote platform involving CPE management. During the course of the year, the Open Gateway Management Protocol (OGMP) was also launched.
This technology is a support solution for the management protocol TR-069 WAN which the DSL Forum approved for implementation in 2004. By 2003, the wireless gateway (based on the System-on-a-Chip architecture) came into the IT market including the company’s acquisition of Sugar Media which was known as a provider of digital media.
2Wire continue to make a name for itself in the IT world with the inception of the multi-service media service platform MediaPortal in 2004. This technology is responsible for the integration of DSL and satellite services into a single architecture.
Two years later, a more improved version was conceptualized with AT&T acting as its main vendor. This offering was in the form of a set-top box which provides messaging, music, digital photography viewing, video, and television broadcast support feature sets. AT&T distributed the technology as a component of its Homezone commercial service.
The residential gateway package HomePortal also began operation on January of 2006. The package included a router together with a broadband modem which allowed the deployment of DSL connectivity function within the context of a SOHO (Small Office Home Office) network environment. Firewall protection, home networking, and remote management features were incorporated into the package. To further support its efforts, in October of 2007, 2Wire gained control of the embedded device software developer Kenati Technologies.
The company’s success is partly attributed to its affiliation with numerous media device groups as well as computer associations like the Wi-Fi Alliance, Femto Forum, Consumer Electronics Association, Broadband Forum, UPnP Forum, HomePNA, Home Gateway Initiative, and International Telecommunication Union among others. The company claims to have shipped approximately 20 million gateways to its residential customers.
2Wire is likewise widely considered as one of the pioneers in the delivery of residential gateways since it entered the computer market. These residential gateways provided consumers with the broadband interfaces that mainly remained available for corporate customers. HomePortal currently supports ADSL 2+ and FTTP along with VDSL (1&2) and FTTN technologies.
